Today I started another mixed media on paper. We have workers downstairs finishing off an area near my studio and I can't work down there with all the noise, so I'm upstairs in my kitchen watercoloring. It's an overcast day, so being downstairs wouldn't allow enough light to paint well anyhow with acrylics. The light in the kitchen is always better because it's up high and faces south.
I wanted a companion piece to the Regatta Blue/Orange that I finished last week. The first one just looks lonely by himself. So, I found a photo that I liked online and started to sketch it on more Carson canva-paper. I'm really liking the texture of the canva-paper. It doesn't buckle like watercolor paper, even the really nice heavy paper is easy to peel with too much water applied.
I think I'm missing summer with all of these sailboat watercolors....Could be the fact that it's been snowing and icing quite a lot considering how early into the season we are. The days have been overcast and bitterly cold and moist. I've been hiding out in the house except for a birthday breakfast for a buddy early in the week.
I have three photos for your today. First is the photo I'm using as a model. Sailing is one of those things that have to imply movement when painted, and it's hard to do in 2D. Which is why applying other cut and painted papers comes in handy. It adds texture and depth.
The Art on Paper Competition finals aren't being announced for another three weeks, so these two mixed media will probably head over to West Annapolis Artworks for a stint in their Winter Show that begins next week. Stop over if you can.
