On my easel today is a redux. I have simply given up hope on a few works that have been staring at me for years, waiting for a reworking, and today I finally picked this one out my in-studio storage vertical rack and saw something that perhaps I missed prior.
As I glanced hard at the lineal lines formed in the paint I realized that the problem was that it was a vertical piece, not an east to west landscape….After that became clear, I began to fill in some of the busyness with soft whites and off whites to add some calm to the canvas. Ultimately, this work will be a storm over Lake Michigan. We had high winds yesterday and the angry bay was sending near freezing water 8-10’ in the air over the breakers. It was quite beautiful but also very dangerous. There was a truly crazy fellow today on the roadside beach in a full-body wetsuit gearing up for a swim in that ice bath. It was 27 degrees out with a windchill in the teens and more high winds. I hope he was sober….
