Last night around 10 p.m. I completed "Mercury Ville", Bangkok, Thailand. The first of several that I will be painting for the West Annapolis Artworks Summer Show that's starting the first week in June. The show has a city theme.
This piece was a bit of a monster due to the size (30x40) and detail that went into creating the piece. I spent 21 hours total on it, which is a new record for me, I think. It was making me nuts up until last night, when I went downstairs to the studio to rework it, not knowing exactly how I would do that. Anyhow, after trying to be serious, I just gave in and gave up on serious. I like whimsy, and trying to paint a building in a realistic manner, when it looks a bit cartoonish to begin with, just didn't make sense. Not sure why it took me eighteen hours to figure that out.
If you're interested in what the building actually looks like, Google "Mercury Ville, Bangkok". There are lines all over the place, mismatched windows, sharp corners jutting out in every direction and so forth. It's a playful building...A nod to the people who inhabit that city perhaps.
