I have two canvases primed for the sunset photos I took last week. Problem is that my kids have been home since Friday at noon...that's almost five consecutive days that I have not been able to get any painting done!
Painting takes about an hour of prep, at least two hours to sling hues, then another 30 minutes to clean up...not to mention, uninterrupted solitude. No such thing available around here lately.
But, I was able to work on something today that takes no quiet whatsoever...reupholstering an armchair. This too will go into that cottage I've been working on in DownEast Maine. Things are coming together and it should be ready to rent by Memorial Day.
To begin, I found a great solid hardwood armchair on Craigslist for $30. Yes, I did have to drive 49 miles one way to pick it up, but this is no ordinary chair. It has an exposed trellis pattern on the back and the style allows for a playful palette and experimentation. After all, this is my most ambitious furniture project to date. It involves staples, paint, fabric, batting, trim, etc. Much more involved than simply recovering a seat cushion.
Here's what I've go so far...
What I started with...this chair was probably between $800-$1200 in it's heyday...
Outer fabric removed and paint on...
I'm playing with wool here to add to the upholstery fabric...Since the cottage is a 1900 cape farm house, I'm doing a little "farmhouse" theme on many of the pillows and on the back of this beautiful chair. The seat of the chair will have another bold fabric in a deep navy floral.
I ordered some lovely little haberdashery (is that how you spell that?) from England yesterday to use for the trim. Not sure which color I will use yet, but purchased some vibrant colors. I'll have this chair finished by Friday and will post then.
But Thursday I will have some painting done so stay tuned! Thank you for stopping in!
